These youth are being used to form sleeper cells in southern India, which in many cases are controlled through the Pakistani High Commission in Colombo. In 2004, Col. (Retd.) Bashir Wali, former Director of Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau, took over as the Pakistani High Commissioner in Colombo. This gives us an idea about the strategic importance of Colombo for those perpetuating terrorism. On the other hand, since the late 80s, the educational institutions in South have been attracting radical Arab & Iranian students. In early 90s, Israeli authorities had recovered explosives from a Palestinian student studying in Bangalore. They had warned Indian authorities that South India in general & West Karnataka in particular were attracting radical students. Around the same period, the Egyptians had cautioned the Indians that radical students denied admission to Arab universities were managing to get admission to institutions in South India. The development indices in South India are higher than those in rest of the country. We cannot afford to let the region fall pray to the enemies of the nation. The authorities must take firm action to tackle the menace & get the errant youth back into the mainstream. Enhanced vigilance dovetailed with an education and employment campaign will help mitigate the problem.

who will win?

At the moment, though, it is Subhash Chandra and ICL, who are giving sleepless nights to Pawar and his band of managers; Reliance & Tata do not really figure at the moment. But as any analyst worth his salt knows, this corporate war between BCCI and ICL – like all other corporate wars – will not be decided by emotions but by the strategic strengths and weakness of the two rivals. Quite simply, BCCI has been peddling a product called cricket for 75 years with no rival around to threaten its monopoly. The new rival ICL, too, will peddle the same product – cricket. So, the war between the two will boil down to product differentiation & the ability to convince the consumer that his product offers better value.

To contain or simply maintain...?

That’s the million dollar question… involving billion lives!
Flood in essence has a long tale of a love -hate relationship with India. And though an excruciating summer makes millions beg for mercy from the weather God, the inability to contain and manage the subsequent downpour, makes sure that the request for mercy becomes resentment to the weather God. The country sees a see-saw game of drought & flood. Fury of floods causing havoc in India is nothing new. Though successive governments have pledged to build embankments, check dams and canals to mitigate this problem, history has been testimony to what extent it has been successful… thanks to a self serving bureaucracy. And while 40 million hectares of India’s geographical area continues to remain flood prone, all that such areas receive is ritualistic aerial view from the ministers, during aftermath of the disaster. Most of the worst affected areas are northern & north-eastern states like Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

Triumph of the great human spirit

Paralympics hopefully can do for them, what the society could not...
Philosophers and revolutionaries oft en proclaim that all are equal. In fact, equality is one of humanity’s insightful aspirations and the very foundation of justice. Interestingly, sports & equality are closely associated. Sports have mitigated White’s superiority over Blacks & ushered equality among races. And it is now, Paralympics, the international sport event for handicapped, which is endeavouring to restore some pride in the lives of 500 million disabled population of the world. Sir Ludwig Guttman, the ‘father’ of sports for the people with disability, realized the need of competition among them. His rather infamous wheelchair game for disabled has become one of the largest international sporting event i.e. Paralympics. Popularity of Paralympics did remove some of the inhibitions of the disabled community. It is akin to Olympics and the next one would be hosted by China.

When two giants commemorate...

State-run oil explorer Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has tied up with global oil giant British Petroleum (BP) for oil & gas exploration and production business in India and overseas. Both the companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which is valid for a period of 18 months and includes knowledge sharing of deepwater exploration (known to be BP’s expertise) & Coal-bed methane (CBM) technology. The pact also envisages participation in each other’s oil & gas acreages in India or foreign land including the CBM acreages in India that ONGC has already found & off shore licences. Well, that’s called a great match!

Oil troubling -Isn’t it nagging?

That’s becoming a trouble indeed - working in Nigeria (the African oil rich hub) has always posed a dare for energy service companies (ESCOs). So what’s new in that? It’s the new bribery investigations by US authorities that are raising legal and financial risks, in turn this might just force them to depart the country. GlobalSantaFe Corp., Transocean Inc. & Pride International Inc. are the three bodies that have all said in regulatory filings that they received requests for information from the US Department of Justice (DOJ), which is probing whether the oil service companies dishonoured the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) by bribing customs officials in Nigeria. The act forbids bribes paid by US companies or their agents, in order to win business abroad.
