Don makes a ‘fair’ deal…

...but will Emami get a ‘handsome’ return?
‘Hi handsome!’ Some years ago this tag was for those tall & dark macho men. But no more! As the ‘to look fair’ fever grips the desi market, fairness is no longer exclusive to the eves of the country. Indian males are now being viewed as a fair game in the Rs.800 crore fairness creams market. And the Rs.600 crore Emami Group is considered to be a pioneer in the men’s fairness cream market. The company unleashed ‘Fair And Handsome’, the men’s fairness cream in 2005. The cream was a runaway success doing business of Rs.27 crores in the very first year itself. Even after big daddy HLL launched the Fair & Lovely Menz Active, Fair And Handsome continued to rule the market with business of Rs.40 crores in 2006. Clearly first mover’s advantage did wonders for the Emami Group. But now with players like Nivea too jumping into the fray, Emami has roped in king of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan to take on the threat from competition. In a candid interview with 4Ps B&M, Mohan Goenka, Director, Emami Group, talks about the company’s marketing and advertising plans with the Bollywood badshah.

RCOM rings in the fabricating tone!!

With aggressive handset-expansion plan in the booming market of India, Reliance Communications (RCOM) enters into a joint venture with Taiwan’s Cal-Comp Electronics to manufacture CDMA handsets in the country. Cal-Comp , which has manufacturing units already in China and Thailand is all set to start its operations in India by the middle of next year. By entering into the deal, Cal- Comp will join the race with players like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, LG and Samsung to add-on to the 51 million handsets to be made this year as compared to 31 million in 2006. RCOM, India’s second largest telecom operator and the market leader in CDMA category has already started the race with the recent launch of its Classic range which starts at Rs.777 and got a mind blowing response in the first ten days of its launch. Moreover, RCOM’s JV seems timely and quite appropriate when players like Essar-Vodafone and Bharti have similar ambitions and are expected to offer handsets at all time low prices.

Re-cycle...

...the game of grit
The infamous & notorious game, cycling has proved to be the most precious & important sport to host economies. Moreover, credit goes to some of the economies like France, Spain, Britain, Italy & Gorgia for their prodigious approach to strategically position this ignored sport. Tour de France is now the blessing for France & other neighbouring host economies. For example, London has spent about €7.4 million to host the event in 2007, which attracted three million tourists, about 2.2 billion TV audiences & generated £37 million as revenue. The UK organises 17 million cycling races every year which contributes £350 million annually. ‘Tour de Gorgia’ is a similar event, pretty famous in USA. This year, it had enthralled half a million foreign spectators. The tour has generated $27.56 million, which is 5% rise over 2006 ( ). These superseded many other international campaigns for creating massive AID/HIV awareness. In addition, these tours have generated myriad of employment too!!

Cricket isn’t just cricket

Cricket can do for Asia what Soccer did for Africa
The amateur inventors of the sports of cricket must not have imagined in the wildest of their dreams that their brainchild would one day become the third most prominent sport in the world, in terms of viewership & the associated commerce. The essence of cricket for most of the South Asian countries as well as for Australia, New Zealand as well as the Caribbean countries is that it not just gives momentary pleasure but has the potential to lift the spirit of the nation to an unprecedented level. Be it the victory of India in the 1983 World Cup when they vindicated that the Caribbeans are not invincible, or the metamorphosis of Sri Lanka from a toy poodle to a world champion in the 1996 World Cup, in both the cases the world was never the same for the two nations again. The same can be said with a bigger conviction about the likes of Australia which has taken not just the game of cricket but its professionalism to a new level which for all the right reasons is getting emulated in many other cricket playing countries. But is it just about spirit?

Serious dangers

That would add to the much more serious dangers presented by its near neighbors Pakistan, India and Israel, all nuclear-armed with the blessing of the United States. Iran resists US or Israeli domination of the Middle East but scarcely poses a military threat. Any potential threat to Israel might be overcome if the United States would accept the view of the great majority of its own citizens and of Iranians and permit the Middle East to become a nuclear-weapons free zone, including Iran and Israel, and U.S. forces deployed there. One may also remember that U.N. Security Council Resolution 687, of 1991, to which Washington appeals when convenient, calls for “establishing in the Middle East a zone free from weapons of mass destruction and all missiles for their delivery.” Washington’s feverish new Cold War “containment” policy has spread even to Europe.
