Telecom giant Ericsson has started a 3G project in south-eastern India, which enables the community to access e-learning, 
and online local information that makes a big difference to people’s lives. There are many grassroots health workers, who are comfortably using hand-held computers for storing medical data and information. And there are students in rural areas of Madhya Pradesh, who learn via TV that makes use of EduSat (Education Satellite). “An internet and a dish connection in high schools connected to EduSat facility enables the students to collect information on the subject of their choice, or talk to experts in the related field while sitting in their schools,” says Reddy.
If e-learning is making a difference, mobile technologies are also chipping in. “ZMQ Software developed an edu-tainment package on health & HIV/AIDS awareness in English, Hindi & Marathi in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University & USAID,” says Hilmi Quraishi, Chief Learning Technologist & Co-Founder, ZMQ. Nasscom Foundation has introduced this package in 100 village knowledge centres. There is a package, developed by ZMQ, DFID & Plan on HIV/AIDS awareness in Kannada, Telugu & Hindi. CKS is exploring scenarios whereby rural schools could use multimedia mobile devices to enhance in-class learnings. “They could use a camera phone to document the environment and create a local encyclopaedia,” said Aditya Dev Sood, Founder, CKS. The route to such development has had its fair share of impediments. States Sinha, “Implementing new technology faces resistance from people.” But then, no one can stop technology forever. Sooner than later, everyone has no option but to live with it.
